Cycling for Change

Written by Alexander J. Scheuch, NBC Editor-in-Chief

Founded in 2014, the club began with a group of friends on a mission to raise awareness of road biking in the Las Vegas community while promoting a healthy and fun lifestyle for both recreation and transportation. From these friendly rides, more and more enthusiastic individuals were drawn to the camaraderie, lifestyle and the beautiful cycling trails of Las Vegas. As time went on, the group decided it was time to organize and give the group its identity – Nevada Bicycle Club.

Today, that core group of friends has expanded to over 100+ members who road bike, mountain bike, and sing their signature one-liner “Happy Birthday to you!” while they celebrate over a cold beer with their significant others (or how group likes to call ‘NBC Hotties’) and traditional Filipino meal – lechon. Whether you’re a founding member or the newest, you will feel like a weekend warrior, partier, and part of the Nevada Bicycle Club family.

When the group members are done conquering their rides through the Aztec Sandstone hills of the Red Rock Canyon, the Three Sisters of the River Mountain Loop Trail, the serenity of the Lake Mead National Park, or the eerie ghost town of Goodsprings, NV, they are active in other ways too. Members have been participating in numerous charity fun rides throughout the Las Vegas valley such as the Las Vegas Honor Ride, Goldilocks Rides, 3 Feet for Pete and Tour de Summerlin, Bike MS to name a few. Most recently, the group took part in the PurpleStride walk to support in the end pancreatic cancer.

In addition to the group members lending a hand in the Las Vegas community, members of the organization share their generosity and compassion with the underprivileged away from the bike, as well. In November 2018, NBC President Dr. Santos Yu, Dr. Kenneth Westfield, Reginald Reyrao took part in the Gift of Sight – Cataract Surgery Mission in Surigao del Sur, Philippines. Over the course of three days, 70+ patients were treated.

In 2017, NBC rolled out the red carpet (literally) and hosted the Sikad Las Vegas charity fun ride at the River Mountain Loop. This was a successful ride attracting more than 160 participants, generating over 13K in revenue towards the School of Experiential and Entrepreneurial Development (SEED) Scholarship program via charitable organization, Gawad Kalinga. This program aims to raise the next generation of entrepreneurs to address poverty through empowerment. During the two-year program, students take a variety of courses that focus on character development, enterprise management, communications, business math, and agriculture. Graduates then become partners or apprentices of existing social enterprises through the Gap Year Program where they continue a hands-on approach to learning and the application of real-world skills. To learn more about SEED, please visit

Building on the momentum and mission of the first annual hosted ride, Sikad 2018 was an even greater success thanks to the countless sponsors, donations, and participants generating nearly 30K towards building an NBC village in the Philippines to empower the less fortunate via charity organization Gawad Kalinga. The Nevada Bicycle Club believes Gawad Kalinga’s mission that everybody deserves to live and grow up in a safe, comfortable and stable environment. Providing a permanent space and building a caring community for the homeless families in our country will have a direct impact on reducing crime, raising productivity and improving quality of life for all. Thanks to all the generous hearts involved, they are pedaling towards that reality.

Lastly, Nevada Bicycle Club membership is open to men and women who enjoy riding with cyclists of different skill levels and experience, love the challenge of riding with varying distances, elevations, and enjoys promoting the beauty of the Las Vegas valley and surrounding areas.
